Between 2008 and 2018, the total annual coal consumption of Victoria's three
brown coal power stations ranged from 53.5 million tonnes of coal in 2013 to
62.2 million tonnes of coal in 2010. These fluctuations reflect variations in
the intensity of each station's operation from year to year. Over this period,
the total annual coal consumption of Victoria's three brown coal power stations
combined has averaged 59.4 million tonnes of coal a year.
In
relation to the second part of the Member for Brunswick's question, it is
difficult to predict how much coal Victoria's brown coal power stations will
burn over the remainder of their operating lives as this will depend on how
long each station's private owners decide to run them for and the intensities
at which the stations are operated.
Future coal operation
rates will depend on market conditions and operational factors affecting each
station, and cannot be removed from the energy transformation that Victoria is
leading through the Victorian Renewable Energy Targets (VRET) of 50 per cent by
2030, Solar Homes programs and the economy wide target of net zero emissions by
2050.
